Morning Wonder
Kayak glides silently
on calm waters.
I awaken slowly,
breath and body widen
as I paddle.
An eagle lifts
from its perch high
in a white pine
along the rocky shore.
Sunlight peeks through trees
as I round a point
that opens to a marsh.
Surprised, I am in full sunlight,
though mist curls and shifts
in the warming
early morning air.
I notice a shape.
I wonder… could it be?
No… that must be a log,
a moose only
in my imagination.
And then it moves,
lifts its head
from the deep.
Sunlight glistens
on water that cascades
from its head and
grassy breakfast.
It regards me as
I regard it.
What wonder
in sharing space
and place
with such
a beautiful being.
